Her Story

Carolyn Louise Johnson was born to Nathan and Nannie Dee Hughes on December 7, 1948. She is survived by sisters Josie Carthern, Mary Johnson, Minnie Inge, Bennie Prince Smith and Nadine Holefield.

She had two loving brothers Melvin Solemon and Mervin Wayne Solemon, who proceeded her demise.

She was the Grandmother of 5 Grandchildren. Domisi, Danielle, Desani, Dailen, Christopher.

Carolyn and her sister Nadine came to Los Angeles in 1967 to visit relatives. Her older brother told her to stay away from these L.A. guys because none of them were any good.

She eventually met Darryl and there friendship blossomed for many years. Carolyn met many of Darryl's friends, everyone thought she was a nice girl. One day Darryl told the "fellas  yes he was going to get married to Carolyn. Amazingly his friends seemed more happy than Darryl. They quickly set up a bachelor party for him and sent him off to the airport to marry Carolyn.

But Darryl got cold feet and started to change his plan. But Carolyn's sister Nadine and her husband wouldn't let that happen, so they set the date for 13 March 1974.

After arriving in L.A. Darryl's friends set up another reception party to wish them well. This made Carolyn feel welcomed and relaxed. She now became a part of Darryl's life.

Some time after the celebrations came their marital struggles, Darryl recalled something his mom would always say. She said, "God doesn't like a divorcing, if you get a divorce you can't get married again!"

One day after we fussed Darryl said to Carolyn, "We have to get some religion if we are to survive this marriage, but of course Carolyn had no idea as to which religion he was considering. Carolyn said, all enthusiastically "yeah, I want to go to the Methodist church because my mother likes that religion."

Carolyn didn't know but Darryl was considering the Jehovah's witnesses because they showed him the publication "The Truth That Leads To ever-lasting Life" and that God had a personal name, Jehovah"! Psalms 83:18 Darryl wanted to know more!

Sister Barbara Alvarado and her companion came to our house , after introducing themselves Carolyn would abruptly leave, after the sisters were gone Carolyn would return home. Sister Alvarado was a very dedicated sister herself.  I learned later that while I was gone to work she revisited Carolyn again

Carolyn as well  learned so many new things from the Bible. We started going to the Kingdom Hall on a regular basis. Carolyn once told me "I love you  Darryl...but I love  Jehovah more than I love you" I couldn't  argue that!!!

She used her gift and  her personality in a very loving way. She lovingly wanted to make God's name known  to all. She became very active in her ministry speaking to anyone who had a listening ear.

One day she met a woman named Gilda Mosely, Carolyn was visiting Gilda's auntie, she asked Gilda whether she too was a witness. When Gilda answered no Carolyn started telling her about the wonderful God Jehovah and how our world is destine to become a beautiful world to live in.

She mentioned how Jehovah will resurrect people who died and how they will have another opportunity to prove their love for Jehovah and live forever. Gilda's answer to Carolyn was just like her husbands answer to sister Alvarado...she too wanted to learn more about Jehovah.

Darryl, Carolyn, and Gilda where all baptized on

 January 5, 1974.

Carolyn served Jehovah for 46 years until the end of her life. She was always active in the field service work until her health began to fail her.

Carolyn aided many either directly or indirectly and she loved speaking about Jehovah's Kingdom. She loved the words of the apostle Paul at 1st Corinthians 3:6.  It is Jehovah God who makes one grow in the  Knowledge of God.

May Jehovah bless us all.
